Illinois Classical Ballet

Welcome to the Magical World of Ballet

Who we are, what we do,and how we do it

Illinois Classical Ballet is a pre-professional ballet school with the students participating in all prestigious International ballet competitions, committed to provide world-class classical ballet training to its students and launch the next generation of dancers into the world stage
We believe that every student deserves the opportunity to explore his or her fullest potential, and strive to make classical ballet training accessible to all talented students who have the desire to dance
Students at Illinois Classical Ballet receive the same training as students of Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet
The Vaganova method is a ballet technique and training system devised by the Russian dancer and pedagogue Agrippina Vaganova (1879 -1951). It fuses elements of traditional French style with the athleticism and virtuosity of Italian technique and classicism of Russian style
The training system is designed to involve the whole body in every movement, with equal attention paid to the upper body, legs and feet. Vaganova believed that this approach increases consciousness of the body, thus creating a harmony of movement and greater expressive range

Main principle of Vaganova method is: all training can be encompassed and displayed in the course of one grand pas de deux

The training regime for the Vaganova method is complex and rigorously planned, to produce a clean, virtuoso technique. Due to its strictly codified training system, the Vaganova method is widely considered to be injury-free, if taught correctly

Illinois Classical Ballet does not teach syllabus based on Vaganova Method.Neither we modify it or incorporate it with different styles

Students of Illinois Classical Ballet receive the same training as students of Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, the way it was created by Vaganova and preserved by  her pupils who became legendary ballet teachers such as Vera Kostrovitskaya, Vera Volkova, Natalia Dudinskaya, Irina Kolpakova, Tatyana Vecheslova,Irina Gensler and others

Vaganova method is an extraordinary system that permits to develop the knowledge of how one’s body should be used in order to dance with expression, yet without injuries, like the best Russian dancers do.Ballet technique  combines elements of French, Italian, and earlier Russian technique, and a training method to teach it

Vaganova-trained dancers are easy to spot: Their technique is deeply internalized and their bodies naturally breathe classical movement—a result of years of highly structured class.
Their eyes are focused, lines pure, port de bras and épaulement adding flair and character to every move
Vaganova incorporated a clear progression of difficulty in class. She was extremely detail-oriented, to the point of being obsessive
Here are a few things Vaganova never tired of emphasizing:

Vaganova believed this basic step was the foundation of all of classical ballet. “One of my teachers from St. Petersburg would say that you could do a dissertation just on tendu alone, and how it affects the entire training,” remarks Grigoriev. The foot leaves a perfect first position, massaging the floor with the ball of the foot and leading forward with the heel..
Vaganova épaulement is characterized by the harmonious shapes attained by the torso, arms, head and even direction of the eyes.
Vaganova technique’s most prominent features is the sculptural balance created by the épaulement
Focusing on clear épaulement not only builds strong technique, but also helps dancers grow stylistically.
Because of her love to jumps, it’s only natural that Vaganova focused on ballon. Synchronizing the port de bras with the movement of the legs creates explosive jumps, while the demi-pliés that begin the warm-up reappear to give the dancer power, lift and a solid landing
The arms should always relate clearly to the positions and coordinate with the movement of the legs.
Vaganova raised the old-fashioned retiré, designating high retiré as different from medium retiré and coupé
